Brookfield Residential is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with veritree that will result in the planting of 13,600 trees to support reforestation efforts in Northern Alberta. With National Forestry Week underway in Canada, the timing felt right to share this commitment.
The trees will be planted in the Sawle Lake region, near Fort McMurray, which was devastated by the wildfires of 2016. This blaze (widely referred to as “The Beast”) destroyed over 1.5 million acres of Alberta’s forests, and rallied the people of this province as never before.
While it’s easy to make sustainability promises, the proof is in the planting. That’s where our partnership with veritree comes in!
veritree is a leading independent online platform dedicated to working with businesses to support forest restoration and urban greening initiatives around the world – while providing accountability and oversight.
Verified Monitoring for Measurable Action
By working with veritree, we can be confident that our efforts are making a lasting impact.
Combining advanced verification technology and leading on-the-ground expertise, veritree is part of a global reforestation movement that ensures transparency in sustainability.
Our Calgary and Edmonton operations are working together to plant 10,000 trees through veritree. Another 3,600 seedlings will be planted to recognize the homeowners moving into Seton Ridge – a new community in Calgary’s southeast.
Each of these 13,600 trees will make a real and positive difference. As they grow, they will capture and store carbon from the atmosphere, reducing pollution and improving air quality.
Equally important, this initiative will help to restore a diverse ecosystem that was largely destroyed by the wildfires of 2016. As the trees and vegetation return, so too will the animals and organisms that are the lifeblood of every forest.
On top of our initial pledge, Brookfield has set a target of planting an additional 10,000 trees in 2026/2027.
Creating thriving communities, investing in the future, and caring for the places we call home is just who we are. These reforestation efforts are part of an ongoing effort to be a responsible Alberta builder and developer.
From energy-efficient homes to walkable communities to supporting reforesting efforts, it all adds up.
