As Rockland Park grows in acres and population, more and more park spaces and playgrounds are being introduced. Today, in Summer 2024, this NW Calgary community is home to two play structures, as well as park space around the pond, along the ridge and nestled into the community.

These spaces were designed with inclusion in mind, inviting all ages and varying abilities to take part in recreation in the community. In Phase 3, along Royston Heath NW, stroll over to the Wizard’s Hideaway where your children can climb, seesaw, swing and bounce on the playground designed for ages 2-12.

Elements of Play

This playground incorporates wooden, earthy elements to consider children’s physical and social development using sustainable pieces that will entertain families with toddlers to pre-teens. Bring the family to enjoy various ways to play, both independently and with friends.

  • Bounce

    o Spring Board
This structure gives kids the opportunity to grow their spatial awareness and sense of balance with three springs below a large board. They’ll learn how shifting their weight makes the board move, how to make room for friends and how different positions can make playing on the board more or less challenging.

    o Pony
With space for one or two, this playground piece can be used independently or as friend, sibling, or parent-tot co-play. Learn to balance, grip, and control the speed of the rocking motion on this modernized playground classic.

  • Swing and Sway

    o Swing Set
Two classic swings and a bird’s nest swing provide opportunities for all ages and abilities. In the classic swings, push your younger children who are old enough to balance and grip on their own, or let your older kids kick their legs to get the swinging motion going on their own. The bird’s nest swing allows for younger tots to co-play with their parents, or folks with different physical abilities to lay down on the larger surface.

    o Seesaw
For two to four riders, the seesaw helps children develop the sense of space and rhythm while considering the comfort levels and abilities of others.

    o Spica 1
For 6-12 year olds, this element takes problem-solving skills to enjoy. Children can stand on this platform alone or with friends as they figure out how to control the speed of the spinning contraption.

  • Climb

    o Track Ride Tower
Climb the net or the notched ramp up to the deck where players can practice turn-taking before gliding across the track, practicing their grip strength as they hold themselves up on a rope. With adult support, younger riders can also enjoy gripping and gliding as their parents support them across the structure.

    o The Wizard’s Hideaway
Built for up to 11 users aged 2-5 years, this playset is equipped with wide stairs, a double-slide and a bench, all perfect for imagination and physical activity. Younger children can confidently climb the wide steps on their own and practice taking turns on the porch, waiting to use the slide. The bench is a great spot for caretakers to supervise or can be used as a meeting spot for imagination play.

Continued Development

Keep an eye out as more playgrounds will be built throughout the neighbourhood and featured here. There are two more already built – a natural play area for all ages to enjoy in various ways, and a climbing and balancing park for slightly older kids to explore on. Plus, you can keep an eye on the ridge as the Osprey Park gets set to open very quickly! The community's Homeowner's Association (HOA), which will be known as The Lodge will open in 2024, with another play structure and recreational areas for adults and kids of all ages to explore.
